Come find us at the Santa Cruz Food Lounge Night Market. There will be craft cocktails, live music, and local pop-up such as La Sofrita, Kickin Chicken, My Mom's Mole, and Tanglewood.
This evening HANLOH will be focusing on a Laotian dish calls Khao Piak. Khao means "rice" and piak translates to "wet."
My connection to Lao cuisine started about fifteen years ago. When I first came to the United States from Thailand, I lived with a Laotian family for many years. I learned a good amount of Laos culture, language, and food. Khao Piak could be described as a type of chicken noodle soup crisscrossed with udon soup.
HANLOH will make our own Khao Piak noodles which are made of tapioca and rice starch. The broth is thick and the noodles are soft and chewy.
I remember we used to make Khao Piak on most Sundays in a ten gallon stock pot to feed a large crowd. Everyone would line up with a bowl in their hand and tried to scoop swimming noodles into their bowl. The garnishes are the key here, an unlimited amount of herbs and goodies for everyone to customize their bowl, it is a final touch to bring the dish to life.
HANLOH will be serving a chicken and vegan Khao Piak on Friday's evening with plenty of topping options.
See you soon!
